soul school is a weekly music program bringing you some of the best soul music from the 60s and 70s. soul music is a merging of african american rhythm and blues and gospel music. in the pre-civil rights movement u.s., african american music was called "race music" and was not played on white radio stations. most northern cities had at least one black radio station where you could hear black music. in addition, when black artists toured they were only permitted to play for black audiences at segregated venues.

the music's geographical roots are in the south of the u.s. and migrated along with african americans to the urban areas of the u.s. during the late forties into the fifties. made famous by such practitioners as ray charles and lavern baker to james brown, and aretha franklin, soul music is the root for virtually every genre of popular music from rock to hiphop.
